Thanks! Working on the final layout for my CMOY and was deciding between 1 or 2 9v :)

what's a CMOY?

If you're a head-file it's a compact amplifier for improving earspeaker performance.

If you're kinky, reading the back pages of Hustler magazine it could stand for an electronic version of a penis enlarger - Complicated Metallic Oxide Yanker. ;)

Actually the answer is maybe.

There are several possible ways that you could configure the batteries. Assume a voltmeter is connected across the terminals with positive on left side:

-+-+ -> -18v
-++- -> 0v
+-+- -> 18v
+--+ -> 0v

Note that these are all series configurations. It may seem obvious to most but we shouldn't assume that everyone understands it.

Just push the + into the - of the other battery and attach your leads to the two terminals that aren't mated together. Instant 18v! :)

Nice, I'm probably going to build my first this winter. I'm going to look into using AA (or AAA for smaller size) though, I hear the 9v recharge very slowly. Post pics when you get it together.

For the usual CMOY opamps, you're gonna need a lot of AA/AAA batteries to get the required voltage. Most of the usual opamps (OPA2227, OPA2132, AD6065) start clipping around 5v; anything under will start sounding worse and worse.

And aphex - if you plan on fitting 2x 9v batteries into an altoids tin... you should probably measure things out first. I think I told you this already, but I thought about doing 2x 9v batteries, until i got all my parts. there was no way in hell i could've fit two 9v batts in this little altoids tin. Lemme go look for pics of my internals.

I'm using a custom cmoy board that someone over at Head-fi designed and had produced by Olimex

9V is rather archaic - use a pair of 4.2V Li-ions in series and you can charge in place with a usb cable. Be sure to observe correct Li-Ion charge/discharge rules strictly, however.

Yes. you're just not going to get much amp hour capacity, that's all.
