What makes you an American?
or Canadian, German, Japanese, etc. :) basically, what makes you someone of that country?
OTHER than the fact that you stay there. What else do you think you might have to say?

Would be really interested to hear anything from anyone. It's just this lil thing that's been nagging me :p

Tough Question, I guess nothing really, I fit in alot better when I lived in Asia than I do in the US. I guess I just too many principles that I expect everyone to follow.

Well, my great grandparents were immigrants and they had to learn English. Their children (my grandparents)had to learn English and my parents had to learn English because they all spoke primarily Spanish at home.

Since my generation has had to learn to speak Spanish, I guess that means we are 'Americanized'!

Still, I feel my European and Cuban roots strongly. I still don't cook 'American', so the process is not complete. ;)

if you are ignorant of other cultures, worship materialism, ignore long-term consequences, and are narcissistic in the extreme, then you are american.

I became really aware that I am an American when talking to a Chinese colleague the other day. She was complaining that her son's school wasn't giving him enough homework since he was free on FRIDAY nights!!! Also she forbid him to have a girlfriend until 21!!!

Well it depends on what you mean; an American citizen is anyone registered as an American citizen who pays their taxes and votes. An American in blood, though, IMO, is someone born there.

Course, America is and always has been "the melting pot", everyone here is from somewhere else.

American as defined by Webster's Dictionary:

Ignorant of other countries, especially those who do not have people that are white. Also they will do things only when it is in their interests.
The example that bugs me the most is about Rwanda. The two factions (hutu and tuti's?) have been fighting, and one has been commiting genicide among the other, and the U.S. has not stepped up to do anything. Over 500,000 people have been killed through the genicide, yet the U.S. has done nothing. However, when Yugoslavia/Serbian area had "only" (no life is worth killing, but I use "only" as a relative comparison) about 10,000 or so got killed, we rush in and go and help them.
Oh well.

I think what makes a person a certain nationality is based on that culture. Traditions, holidays, etc all contribute.
