i believe you need more than a tuner, and need about $2K in equipment, but i'm not positive about that. I just remember when a guy I know got the equipment to get HD vids for his website, it was not cheap.

Depends on what HD he's talking about. OTA hd? He can grab an ati card for 50 bucks off buy.com.

I don't want OTA HD. That's pathetic. I tried the ATI HDTV crap and I threw it away after 3 minutes of use.

My TV already has a QAM demodulator and so basically I want to be able to record whatever I can watch on TV.. so I'm thinking of splitting hte coaxial cable and hooking it into my computer for recording purposes...

So i'm looking for tuner recommendations....

Still have the ATI tuner? I'll buy it off you before you throw it away.

In that case will Vista RC2 do the trick?

Assuming you're intending to receive encrypted QAM-modulated content (which is probably/usually all of it save for the local channels), still no luck there - the current tuners that have QAM support can only receive unencrypted QAM signals. You'll have to wait for something like the ATI CableCard readers, and even then you might not be able to purchase them separately instead as part of a whole PC...

It's a QAM tuner as well as OTA. However, you're not going to get much more than what you get OTA as most cablecos have encrypted just about all HD channels. Vista won't do jack for you without a cablecard tuner, and they aren't available yet.

This, or another QAM-compatible tuner is the best you're going to do right now.

Why do they do this? So it cannot be redistributed via the net would be my guess?

This isn't as simple as it sounds. I.e. what if you get your HD channels off Dish? Have to get a Dish receiver, then route that through a TV card or demodulator then a TV card? I think I probably need an HD-DVR to rip from, but I could be wrong...

Any thoughts?

BTW - If you're going to point me to another thread or call repost, don't waste my time.

You have two choices for the time being: My-HD MDP-130 or FusionHDTV series. However, it gets complicated when you have a dish.

The My-HD card is better, since it is hardware accelerated, compared to the software rendering of the FusionHDTV card, but it is also more expensive.
