Imagine if we communicated at work as we do on ATOT.

VP for Post-Productivity Product-ty Stuff: We will implement our new strategy blah, blah, blah.
Us: Derp.
VP: Excuse me Mr. Atot, did you have something to add to the discussion?
Us: Your mom.

we kind of do here

Our warehouse guy was having issues with his computer running slow. I was bored and down there hanging out. The IT chick was checking it out and I told the warehouse guy "check to make sure your internet cord isn't kinked. That could slow it down." He actually checked :D Then tried to beat me up.

The IT chick finally finished checking it out. "Well here is my diagnosis: You're fucked."

Reminds me of a post I read years ago about unplugging the printer cable to let the extra "packets" that had built up get out.

Yep. People that speak down to you have no respect for you. You have to find out where that lack of respect comes from. If it's because you're a screwup, you need to work on that. If it's because of personality issues on their end, you need to call them out.

I know I'm intelligent, talented, and valuable. I'm also very nice and accommodating to everyone else, despite their status. People that talk down to me for no reason get embarrassed really quick.

In this context I believe it's "you're mom."

+1 reps for this thread.

I haven't had to deal with that exactly, but I have had another employee try to pull that stuff. She would do things like: try to get people to do her work for her, insist that she owned certain pieces of company property just because she had been assigned to use it from time to time, and talk down to anyone that looked like an easy target. The real twist is she was on the absolute bottom rung at a McDonald's and, even by their low standards, she was basically considered the village idiot. They only kept her around because she was good at kissing ass with some of the equally useless regulars.

The last time she tried talking down to me I called her on it and she completely lost her mind in full view of a bunch of customers. She shook sleeves of cup lids at me while sort of growling. When that didn't work she tried it again, closer and closer until she was shaking cup lids on either side of my head. I just stared her down. Apparently management didn't like the show she put on for all those customers, because the next time I saw her she couldn't get out of my way fast enough and there were sorrys and thank yous all over the place.

Claim hostile work environment... then harassment if things get out of hand. Maybe you'll get promoted when HR gets scared.

No, I don't put up with it... and I'm in the Army where I very well could HAVE to put up with it.
