If i set mobo jumper=100mhz fsb, and overclock it to 166mhz, it no longer turns on?

mobo=k7vta3

i upgraded the chip to a sempron 2500, which is multiplier = 10.5 and 166mhz bus.

the mobo was jumpered to fsb=100mhz. it booted up as 1050mhz.

in bios, i set it to 166mhz and rebooted. nothing appeared on screen. i had to reset cmos.

Why didnt bios=166mhz bus work when the chip is 166mhz?

Set the jumper for the actual speed, 166 MHz. The manual may help.

You'll need one of the more recent versions of that motherboard that actually support a 166 MHz (x2) FSB.

Just because it has the setting in the BIOS, doesn't mean it will run it. If the board only officially supports 133MHz, then you're overclocking to reach 166. Not every board can reach that speed, no matter what the CPU supports. So it seems like you may not have a revision of the board that supports it, although perhaps a BIOS update will allow it.

when jumper = 166mhz, the computer boots up as sempron 2500.

hm.. when jumper=100mhz, I can set bios between 100mhz and 166.

when jumper =166mhz, i can set bios between 166 and 199mhz.

so it looks like bios is overclocking the motherboard jumper.
so when jumper=100, and i set bios to 166, i'm overclocking the fsb by 66%, which crashed the system. it looks like this is regardless what the bus speed of the chip is.

Wait what? When you set the jumper to the proper bus speed, it boots up as the proper CPU speed and identifier, and gives you options for overclocking the bus...what exactly is the problem?

Most likely doesn't have a PCI lock and the PCI bus is going way out of spec.

ahh. yes.. forgot about that.

(been 2 years since I overclocked a system.)
