if i read this right, there is no lifetime warranty for evga 8800 gts/gtx

I believe that's only if you use the step-up program.

Here's a quote from the EVGA site.
"The new warranty program applies to all retail EVGA graphics cards and affords the original purchaser lifetime coverage for as long as they own their card. The new program will retroactively begin June 22nd, 2005, extending lifetime coverage to the newly released retail GeForce 7800-based graphics cards.

When I was reading about the step-up program I came across that AR, AX business and that's when it said only 2 years for one ending in AR. I'm pretty sure if you buy from a retailer you'll get the full life-time warranty.

EVGA reserves the right to claim for shipping fees along with a service charge* from the customer for any incomplete or modified product that is returned and requires repair or replacement, or when the customer is not entitled to any coverage under this lifetime warranty. EVGA provides this same lifetime warranty to any graphics card and mainboard repaired or replaced pursuant this lifetime warranty.

Step-up cards do get LT warranty so long its last two suffices fall into the mentioned categories as described above.
