I have one of those instant fries in a box.. the cover sticks to my microwave so I am thinking of putting a paper towel under it

will the paper towel burst into flames??

IIRC, the microwave works generally by heating water molecules. Thinking way back to HS sciences, there's also something to do with metal resonance frequencies, which is why I don't put spoons in there anymore.

The RF frequency is tuned to the frequency of the water molecule, causing it to vibrate. The waves don't escape to boil your blood due to the faraday cage (the hole plate thing on the door). The holes are not big enough for the waves to go through, but big enough so that you can see your food spin round and round..
