what are the chances I'll be charged customs and taxes? I wanted to get a T40 and can't find them here in Canada.. but if I order one on eBay, I don't want to be slapped with hundreds of dollars in taxes at the door

You Canadians make me sick. You have no morals. You Canadian eBayers always ask us honest, law-abiding Americans to say a $1000 item is a $20 gift to avoid customs.

Just kidding :)

Do what i did..

catch hold of any trustable student who is going to USA, or is already there.

Before he returns to your country (for vacation/whatever), order a laptop online and get it delivered at his residence in USA.

He ll simply carry the laptop back to your country.. lo and behold... NO CUSTOMS :)

Well.......... if they use UPS or Fed Ex then they will (couriers) charge you $35 Broakers fee and Customs will Charge you at least 7% GST & whatever sales tax your province has :( Also any duties on the equipment (which I think there are none on coputer goods).

Cheers,
