If I move out on my own and claim independence, can I get financial aid from college?

Last I knew only if you got married, otherwise you have to be 25 to claim independence in financial aid's eyes.

Isn't there a way for your parents to renounce responsibility? I think I read that somewhere, you can give up your minor status if your parents agree.

It's virtually impossible. My wife (g/f at the time) tried, and tried, and tried, and was never granted independence. She even had her parents write a letter to the university stating that they didn't (and wouldn't) pay a dime for her education. Still no dice.

It fscking blows.

yeap you have to be 25 or married or out of the armed forces.

The short answer is no. If you need more details, just ask.

I asked what happens if I ran away from home and never contacted my parents. They replied that I would have to have an official witness (like a judge or something) sign an affidavit saying that indeed I was independent.

It's 24, not 25. I'm now considered independent according to the FAFSA, and I'm only 24. Unfortunately, Cornell's policy is that if you first applied as a dependent, that's how they'll see you, no matter what. Too bad, cause I could use the extra loot.

if you are living with your parents you have to be at least 24 to be independent...but if state that you live on your own then you are considered indepedent and that means more money!
