AVG Internet Security was real good about asking me to allow/deny evertime my software would try to "phone home", as well. What else out there is just as good, for being lightweight and cheap/free? I've used AVG for many years because our business owned licenses but now they are expired and I need to explore my options.

Right now, I'm considering Comodo Firewall (Free), but I'm not sure how it stacks up, especially when it comes to outbound connections.

eta: I use two machines. One machine is Windows 7 x64 and the other is XP sp2 x86.

I believe Comodo is comparable to the AVG one, so try it out for a little while and see what you think. I've used it for years, it's pretty good.
