If I jump from Windows 7 to Windows 10 TP, do I lose the free W10 upgrade?

I'm thinking of running W10TP in a machine my dad uses because W7 is being soo slow and buggy. The question is, do I lose that free upgrade to W10? I can save license key, although I'm not sure that will be the process in which you get the free license. Maybe you will have to be running W7 or W8 to get the free W10

If w7 is not running right then it has issues that only a clean install can fix. I would reinstall it and make sure that it has anti-malware protection/anti virus and an active firewall to prevent malicious programs/script from affecting it. From what you describe the registry has been corrupted and/or affected by malware. You could start by installing the free version of malwarebytes and run a scan to remove what you can and then see if it improves. You also need to run defrag to improve performance.

Since Im going to reinstall an OS anyway I rather go with an upgrade rather than W7 again. W8 is said to be 10-15% faster and lighter than W7, I expect W10 to at least match that. W10 TP might not but its better for my dad to already get used to the new look and feel

You need to understand that the w8 interface is metro and not the gui that w7 provides. You have to install classic shell in order to get the functionality of w7. W10 provides the option of metro or classic interface instead of forcing you to use a 3rd party program to get it.

I would say no, But*

*They have not said how you have to validate your W7 to receive the upgrade, whether you have to have it installed or not.

Most likely you will just have to put in your key into a website.

I know that Microsoft has never allowed a Technical Preview to be upgraded to a full OS, so I don't think they would start now.

The free upgrade to Windows 10 is only valid if you have a qualifying OS to upgrade from.

Also, Windows 7 is not slow and buggy on decent hardware, so your time may be better spent find out what is causing it to misbehave.

They have said to me that you will have to log in to the Microsoft website from your Windows 7 or 8 PC.

I asked them this specifically and the sales rep assured me it would be the case.

Yeah but if One Upgraded to Win 10 Preview he can not log On from Win 7 or Win 8.

What I would do?

Use an App. like Acronis True image (TI) and make an image of the current Win 7 to an external enclosure HD.

Upgrade to the free Win 10 Preview.

When the real Win 10 comes (July to early fall) backup from the Win10 Preview whatever personal files your dad added after the imaging.

Image back the old Win 7. Upgrade to the free Win 10, and then add the files from the Preview.

Imaging with TI is usually a 10 - 15 process.

😎

I was able to upgrade from 8 preview to the cheap 8 release with no problem.
Expecting to do the same again.
Except this time for free instead of cheap.
