If i want to hook up a couple of hard drives using firewire or usb 2.0. Is an external enclosure the only way to go? What other possibilities are there.

i would say no it's not.

i have a ads usb 2.0 case and although it's not the same case it is similar as in made for 3.5 ide hardrives and 5.25 optical drives.

its controller is not like the controller on your mainboard that has a bios for master and slave drives.

I just today installed a Firewire card and a ADS Firewire HDD enclosure for a friend. It contains one HDD. No room for more. But . . . all I need to do to add more drives is to get additional enclosures and daisy chain them. They come with a 6-inch 1394 6x6 connector.

There are enclosures built for multiple drives as well.
