If I have a full WinXP backup how best to restore here?

I formatted my drive and put linux on my laptop to run some tests etc. Before doing so I made a full backup of the WinXP including system state. What is the best way to reinstall windows using that full backup?

I tried installing windows and then using the XP backup utility to restore the backup I created, but when the system rebooted the drive became unreadable. Running Fixmbr from recover console did not help.

When you performed the backup, did you choose to back up 'All information on this computer' which allows you to create a system recovery disk to use in case of problems?
