If I have a CD-RW drive, do I need a CD-ROM drive?

I'm building another computer, with a CD-RW (Yamaha 20X). Is there any reason that I can't just use that as the CD-ROM drive? In the past I have used this CD-Rom drive to create the 'image' that is then copied onto a CD-R, so I haven't copied 'on the fly". (I tried but it said it was configured wrong for it to do it that way, probably have to be on different IDE ribbon cables). Or should I just get a CD--ROM drive? Thanks.

Well, you don't really need an additional CDROM for copying music CD's. It's just more convenient to copy from another drive (even with on-the-fly disabled) than to image every CD onto your HDD and then having to replace the CD in the drive with a blank.

If you don't mind this minor nuisance and the CDRW is reasonably fast to act as a stand-alone reader, it's all you need.

no.... purchase a second cd player or dvd cuz you don't want to wear out your burner. if you are strapped for cash, then yes, otherwise, buy a cd rom at least.

The extra wear and tear is the only real issue that I can see.
