If I have $500.... and want to upgrade...

I have a case, good power supply, hard drive is big enough, etc... which route should I go?

I have a Q6600 (not overclocked) with 4gb of RAM, and a Radeon 4800 Series (1GB).

I want to build a backup server using my spare parts from my existing machine and cannibalize them for the backup server (so the 4GB, the processor, possibly the mobo though I don't mind replacing it).

I want to upgrade my main PC to be a better gaming PC rather than anything else. I don't think quad core is worthwhile because gaming you really don't use it, and I'd rather have better clock speed.

I have all the software and stuff, so I'm open for suggestions. Help me out 🙂

Quick edit: I need to buy a 1TB drive for my backup server, and a case/PS (was thinking a small shuttle type box) as well. I am fine with onboard video for that server, it's basically going to be in a closet anyway 🙂

Easy answer: higher clock speed and quad-core! If that Q6600 is a G0, you should be able to get a decent OC out of it.

Those parts are all overkill for a backup server. Also, quad cores are definitely worthwhile at this point. Most games released recently have true multicore, and almost all games going forward will. I don't know if there's many worthwhile upgrades in that price range :/ What revision is your Q6600?
