I am thinking about a new notebook.

What my need is:

13" display size and up
weight 2.5kg or below
dvd combo drive
wifi
a good videocard(for 3d games)

I am taking this notebook to travel(business trip), so i want it light
and i want it to look decent.
that's y i pick Sony SZ series

the videocard for 3d games; i am not going to play crysis with it, i just want to some mid quality 3d games in my leisure times.

Are there other choices than Sony SZ series

oh my notebook will do some emails, ms word, excel, pictures, mp3, movies, browsing, 3d games...

I have a similar budget and have been going back and forth between the Sony SZ, Lenovo thinkpad, and dell xps 1330, and Dell D630. I can't yet seem to make up my mind, but i'm leaning towards the SZ or thinkpad. If you can wait it might be worth it to wait for the new Penryn processors that should be out soon. FWIW the SZ is darn slick looking and feeling, but it also seems to come at a bit of a premium vs. the other options.

I own one of the new Thinkpads. It's not as good as the old one. I would have returned it, except Lenovo nixed the return policy.

The new Toughbooks look quite nice, though, and Asus is always good.

i just saw Asus W7S yesterday, and now i'm kind lean towards to it..

specs are the same. except the look.
asus is 4mm thicker
0.2kg heavier
not as slick design as Sony, but i am not saying it is ugly. It still looks neat!

but $600 less

I would opt for the new Macbook Air.

I don't think that it's much of a 3D performer. Although the form factor is pretty sexy.

If you didn't need the internal combo drive, I would say go for the Asus U6 or U3. At least one of those notebooks has a switch that lets you switch from dedicated to integrated graphics to save battery time when you're on the go. I think it's the U3 that has this feature, but I'm not sure.

There is also the F8 series if you want something cheaper but performs really well - the F8 (depending on the specific model) is a 14" notebook with the ATI HD2600 card, though it is a tiny bit above your weight requirements, but it is much cheaper than a Sony SZ.

Otherwise, I'd take a look at the Asus W7. As another poster said, it isn't as slick, but you'll easily make up for it in your wallet.

One negative with the SONY SZ is a very large external power supply. Another is the ton of bloatware that they install.

Personally I am not at all impressed by the trackpad or keyboard on the Sony, but the Dell's is ok.

Give me a break, you call this a very large external power supply? It's comparable to any other laptop power supply. And a ton of bloatware? Sony laptops have no more "bloatware" than Dell, HP or Lenovo. And if there is anything installed you don't like, you can uninstall them.

If it were me, no question about it, I'd get the SZ. The SZ makes all the other laptops just look cheesy (except for Apple's lines of notebooks).
