i saw slumdog millionaire and wouldn't mind living with someone like Latika for the rest of my life and be retired at the tender age of 24.

lets see, thats 490,000 rupees

depends on the place

here in delhi you could rent a decent apartment for 10,000 rupees a month
you could get decent food, if you cook yourself, for 1500 rupees a week.

so 16,000 a month for basic living

= 30 months.

dude you are usually not going to still be living with your parents if you plan to leave the country.

There are different levels of comfort. What you should be asking is "I am living in X city, on X dollars a month with these bills, where does that place me in India with only $10k?"

I know some that spend $50k a month sometimes and others that couldn't spend that much in a few years...both live 'comfortably'.

Ignorant is a glorified word for stupid. In your case, I'll apply both.

Curious, what is the american equivalent wage to get hooked up with something like that there? Would you say any middle class can have that?

to rent a house like this would be pretty similar to US prices, $2000-4000 a month depending on neighborhood. a cook is a marginal expense, $100 (5000 rupees) a month. most middle-upper class families have a cook as it is so cheap, but you have to be a very wealthy indian or be earning in dollars to spend that much on a house.

real estate is pretty equivalent to the US. other than that, everything is relatively very cheap if one is converting to dollars.

what do you do in india for a job man i thought it was like all poverty

A nice room with a view ensuite and cable in McLeod Ganj will run you less than $150/month. You do the math on food, depends on how you want to eat.

i don't work here...my dad is posted here w/ the world bank and is paid in USD

edit: and yes, there is a lot of poverty, but there are a ton of rich people in cities like delhi and mumbai. imported cars here are taxed 100%, so a 7 series or s-class costs almost 200k, yet you see them all over the city. the gap between the rich and the poor is vast.
