If I got a cable modem...

...but didn't want cable TV, would they be able to block the TV from me? Or would I get some channels to? I've got Direct TV, but don't currently have local channels without pulling out the rabbit ears. Just wondering if anyone's tried this. The company is comcast.

This is true, but they still send all the frequencies. My friends family had DirecTV and Optimum Online. My friend wondered the same thing one day, so he hooked up the cable to his TV and lo and behold he had the basic family package. This was about a year and a half ago, so they (Cablevision) may have changed it.

I know someone in this area said that when they place one of their filters on the line, it disturbs the cable modems. Example. My friend with comcast only has the basic 13 channels, but gets 2-55 or whatever because they can't filter it. It's an unadvertised perk...

They don't even bother doing it here anymore.

Comcast just charges you the difference if you get Internet without cable TV, so you really have no choice but to buy TV.

Extortion anyone?

That doesn't happen here with Insight. They can filter everything.

You will most likely get some of the very bottom and very top channels, but you won't get everything. When they blocked my cable TV but left the RoadRunner on, I still got like 3-6 and 67+ but didn't get anything in between.

Of course sometimes they don't come out and put the trap on the cable so you get free cable TV. Had that happen a few times already.

im not sure about your situation, but this might help.

my friend pays for comcast tv and cable internet. we wanted to play xbox live at his house one day but his ethernet cord wouldn't reach from the computer to his tv. so we tried this out.

we moved his modem only to the tv area, unhooked the cable from his tv and plugged it into his modem, and hooked his modem to my xbox. low and behold, we could get on xbox live no problem.

so i know for a FACT that the same cable sends both signals. now if they are filtered outside or not i am not sure of. and he lives in an apartment btw.

Yes it's all the same cable. THe cable modem just pulls out the Computer signal and the Cable TV or Box pulls out the TV channels. You can move it around all you want. Out where the cable box is for your area (usually in someone backyard) they put a filter on the cable that can block out whatever channels or services you aren't supposed to get.... They what comes to your house it whatever you are actually paying for.

my roadrunner has a filter at the street. one day it fell off 😉 but during their routing neigborhood audit they put a new one on. I have directv with local channels, but it was nice to have the basic cable plugged into my HTPC....

When it was @Home, I had spliced my cable modem input and ran it to a TV and got channels 2-31 plus about 57-64. That gave me ESPN 2 at the time so I was happy. 😉

Yeah, It's 42.95 here with a $13 basic cable charge. If you don't have basic cable then they charge you like a 10 dollar surcharge on top of the 42.95 internet cost. May as well pay an extra 3 bucks.
