Hello, I was wondering under a LAN (such as the library), does each computer have a seperate IP address? Thanks

Thanks, btw is it easy for websites to track your IP address to your actual location (or do they have to contact the ISP first?BTW I'm not doing anything illegal, I'm just curious)

Depends...

From a home environment, the website logs your IP address and time of visit. So they would have record that 123.45.6.7 visited at 07/25/2004 01:47 AM. An admin could quickly lookup that IP address to see what provider owns the block, but beyond that would need to contact the ISP to see which client was given that IP at that particular time. And unless compelled by law or a very good reason, most ISPs won't just dole out that information.

In a library setting, you can have greater anonymity. One may assume that the library has 1 public IP address (WAN side) and each client machine was given a private IP address (LAN side). Point is that if you went to visit a certain website, they would have record of that the WAN IP address which could be resolved back to the library, not specifically you.

The admins at the library may indeed have records of what sites the client machines visit. But, it is all a moot point if you did not have to log into the PC in the first place to identify and authenticate yourself.
