Sure you are. Say your interest rate is 19%, and you aren't required to make any payments for 6 months. If you don't make those payments, your $500 balance will be roughly $550 when you return.

The VDP program is a marvelous convience, to be sure, but you have to be careful. I went to Puerto Rico for three months in 1998, and my Discover Card refused to cover me, trying to claim that Puerto Rico being only a semi-independent commonwealth still under US control, did not qualify. I was upset and irate!

Luckily, my brother-in-law is a professional debt counselor, and he told me about the little known Federal VDP Resolution Program. I took my case to them and won! I reccomend FVDPRP to anyone who doesn't get the full six monthis of VDP relief they are legally entitled to. It works.

When she got back, the bank informed us that kidnapping is not covered under the VDP, since it is not a vacation. If she had wanted it to be covered, she would have had to enroll in the Unexpected Abscence Deferment Plan, which has a monthly fee.

Well, you don't HAVE to. You can always let it accumilate late fees. Eventually it'll get written off to a collection agency and you'll have to deal with them. Also your credit will be shot for at least seven years. Hope you have fun while your credit goes down the crapper.

Ahh yes, the VDP, I actually just went to my CC's site and read up on it. It's great, I didn't know they offered such a thing. Now I know and I'll definately be using it the next time I go on a trip out of the US.

Of course, there are a bunch of us who have used it successfully, my only advice to you would be to make sure you call your CC Company and make sure you understand all the terms as you don't want to get caught up in a legal battle like the guy who went to puerto rico.

Even if you can have them defer the monthly payments, the interest will build up each month. Be prepared for a huge bill when you return.

You should get AMEX Blue. It's VDP covers situations other cards don't, like kidnappings, Pacific island maroonings, and internment by foreign governments due to drug smuggling.

whats soo confusing about that? amex is awesome , they can take care of you in wierd situations like that, thats why i have an amex card with me at all times. they are also accepted world wide in thousands of locations. amex blue is an awesome card!


case in point: my friends brother in law was vacationing in hong kong and he had bought some reefer one night and when he bought it, he was immediatly arrested, well the chinese govt. is pretty messed up and they declared him an enemy combatant and then eventually said he was a US Spy, well when he was eventually extridited by the US he told Amex what happened they waved all the interest for the 4 months that he was locked up.
