I just got Motorola V300 from T-mobile and was wondering if I could make my own ringtones or just download mp3 ringtones into the cell for ringtones if I get the USB data cable. How else can I get ringtones directly from mp3 songs. And without paying like $1/ringtone?

What else can I do w/ data cable? Can I download/upload pictures and games?

I would like to know as well. I wasn't under the impression that you could do this with the V300, although I know there are monophonic ringtones out there.

With the data cable you can make your own mp3 ringtones, upload pictures, games, contacts, etc. Be aware that the motorola usb data cable is sold with the cd containing drivers / software ($$$$) or it can be sold without. This software is NOT free. However you can find it on the internet.

For the mp3 ringtones you need to find out what your phone can support. I don't know the exact specifications, but typically it should be able to handle 30 secs encoded at 64kps (mono). (This is what I use on my v600)

I use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) to shorten my mp3s.
DBAmp (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm) to encode

So all the sellers on ebay selling the cable for like $5 are probably w/o software, right?

I have the v300, data cable, and software. You need to get the Mobile Phone Tools. It'll let you sync your contacts and calendar with Outlook, manage your audio, video, and pictures, and do other things, which I don't remember right now.

Basically, you buy the cable for 7-8 bucks and run the software. So far, it's taken mp3s of all bitrate.

Read the howardforums for more info, or you can PM me.

I've made/used 2 of my own ringtones the past 4 months I've had my V300. First was the whistling theme from Kill Bill, now it's the theme from Resident Evil. Most ringtones will need to be modified to sound good though, I used Audacity to take out the bass.

Oh, and if you do make your own mp3 ringtones, they need to be encoded at 22,000hz rather than 44,000hz.

I simply used mp3trim (200 kb download) and iTunes (since I already had it) to re-encode. Around 30 seconds long seems to be the sweet spot.

Audacity is a free program as well, and I've found it to be quite good for making ringtones. You can trim down the length with it, but more importantly filter any sound under a specified frequency, which means you can avoid the nasty bass distortion from a cell phone speaker.
