I know there's an existing thread for Avatar but SPOILERS was stated on top, so I did not read any further.

Thinking of heading out to check out Avatar this week, is IMAX worth it? Also, if we can't handle FPS games, should we even try for IMAX?

I think IMAX would be a bad idea. If you get motion sickness due to the low framerates, you might have to wait for the DVD on this one

My friend who is an FPS freak was nauseated for much of Avatar on 3D IMAX.

I don't get sick with FPS even with my projector's 90" image but I got a mild headache with the non-IMAX Digital 3D presentation of Avatar.

PS. This is a better thread on Avatar puking than the other one. ;)

IMAX 3D is the only way to see it. Make sure you go to one with a good audio system too. I saw it in IMAX 3D at the Universal Studios IMAX in Orlando.

The trick with any 3D movie is to let the focus of the camera be your focus. If you are the type that is trying to see the details in the background constantly or figure out which object is closer than another object, you'll get motion sickness.

Last, if you look at a normal tube monitor and the flicker of the screen bothers you at 60Mhz or even 75 Mhz... you may want to reconsider watching an IMAX 3D movie until they can up the framerates past 24.

If you are in both categories, i.e. tends to change your focus to other objects that are not the primary camera focus or are bothered by low refresh rates, then I suggest never watching a 3D movie.

The trick to watching a 3D movie is to relax, let your eyes unfocus just a tad, and enjoy what is the main focal point of the camera but use your peripheral vision to gather in the background details.

What do you mean "up the framerates", this is not a computer game, they could display the framerate at whatever they please. The reason it is displayed at 24fps is because its shot at 24fps.

I hate 3D. It doesn't add much to the movie. It's still a beauty to behold so just go see it in a regular theater.

Not really. The reason it is displayed at 24 fps is the hardware cannot display anything above 24 fps for 3D. According to James Cameron, the DLP projection systems in theatres can't handle 48 fps for 3D. He states the current technology can theoretically support 48 fps for 2D, but only 24 fps 3D because it's a stereo image.

To display 48 fps 3D, they'd need to retrofit all the theatres with new technology.

Some people have been calling for 30 fps, but he says that's pointless, because 30 isn't that much better than 24, and would still require new hardware. Plus, 30 is not directly compatible with 24, for backwards compatibility. So, he thinks the next step up should be 48 fps. I agree totally.

However, I'm not sure that's the reason people are getting sick. I think the bigger reason is just the 3D-ness of it, and the very large screen. I don't ever get headaches or sick with 2D movies at 24 fps (aside from Blair Witch).
