If I get AOL broadband, do I have to use the AOL software?

My friend has AOL, and to connect he has to open AOL and type in his username and password. He can use Firefox etc, but only while running the AOL browser (if he crosses the AOL browser off he is disconnected). Is there any way to connect WITHOUT ever using the software? If so, how?

If AOL is the actual ISP, no there is no way around it. If the cable company or phone company is going to be your ISP and your ISP gives you AOL, then no you don't have to use the software.

If your in the uk you can use a variety of modern broadband routers to make the connection for you, however you have to create another aol identity to do this other than your primary login. I have done this many times using a netgear DG834 series router for people that get AOL (no comment 😉) If your in the us or using cable as opposed to (a)dsl then i am sure netgear will have a model that supports cable and AOL.
