If I get a PhD in anything, does that mean I can put a Dr. in my name? Can I be called a doctor?

So if people ask me what I do, I could say I'm a lawyer, teacher and doctor? Even though I have no medical knowledge or practice? Seems a bit misleading.

Depends on the situation:

If you have a PhD in the liberal arts usually you just add PhD at the end of your name
If you have a science PhD, it can either be Dr. or in the academic setting Prof.

I think it is the same for engineering as well.

Also, if you're not too hung up on all that accreditation crap you can grant yourself a PhD and be on your way in minutes, doctor.

No you dolt. You're a Philosophiae Doctor or doctor of philosophy. Just because someone has "Dr." as a title doesn't mean it pertains to the medical industry.

Hmm I think what he means is that he can say he is a doctor, which in itself is misleading since some people may think he is saying that is his profession.

Saying "I'm a doctor" can be different than saying "My name is Doctor so-and-so" which is what his original question was. You WOULD be a doctor with a Ph.D. in physics or something. You'd be a doctor of philosophy (not, like, doctor of medical dentistry or something).

Yeah, take Dr. Dre for instance.

I have some professors that'd be highly offended if we DIDN'T call them Doctor.

Yeah, take Dr. Dre for instance.

That is not a title earned by education in any way.

Good, because it's really an M.A. hyped up to sound more significant.

He would say "I am a PhD."

Let's throw this into the mix as well and say yes, I'm asking this too.

My reply was that "So if people ask me what I do, I could say I'm a lawyer, teacher and doctor? Even though I have no medical knowledge or practice? Seems a bit misleading."

So, although you could call yourself Dr. Nik, you cannot say that you are Dr. Nik, the teacher, doctor and lawyer, correct?

Why are you surprised? Do you really think Dr. Dre SOUNDS like he's had any real education?

Umm, my point wasn't whether or not saying he is a doctor is correct or not. I was mearly saying why calling yourself a doctor could be misleading.

YES. For the love of god, how many ways does it have to be explained. You can have a Ph.D. in physics. That makes you a doctor of philosophy in physics. You can have a Ph.D. in teaching. You can say "My name is Doctor Nik." and you would be correct.
