You're more likely to be killed in the military than at college. You're also more likely to be ordered to murder unarmed civilians. However it is a steady job with better than average job security. So financially it's probably not such a bad idea as long as you don't get killed. It may be safer to get a job as a garbage man though.

Note that the Air Force, with the exception of a RARE few (AKA pilots) are generally hundreds, if not thousands of miles from combat zones - and if I went to University Park, I'd be FAR more likely to be killed there than I would as an authorized person on ANY US Air Force facility.

Yes, because USAF ground members are ordered to murder unarmed civilians.

If your vision isn't better than perfect, join the Navy. Whatever you do, don't join the Army, Guard, or Marines, unless you want to die in the desert.

1) You will not be scrapping bird sh!t of any runway anywhere. Unless you really screwed up, broke laws, etc. Think of it as ironic punishment.

2) Anyone who believe that military personnell are ordered to fire on unarmed civilians is an idiot. Period. The US military follows the Geneva convention more closely than any other nation.

3) I'd say job security is bar none, but the USAF is cutting many career fields right now. We're thousands of people over our congressional mandated max. Look up 'Force Shaping' for more information. Not all career fields are overmanned though, Medical squadrons and Security Forces are usually undermanned and always looking for people. EGRESS and Propulsion/Engine shopts usually seem to be undermanned at my base as well, but I am not sure how they fare AF wide.

4) Coming in with college creds will get you a little more rank from the get go, usually E2 or E3. Not too much, but its nothing to sneer at either.

5) There is a lot of beaucratic redtape. It is a goverment organization, after all.

6) Hurry up and wait.

Now you could join as an E3. Wait till you graduate and you can join as an O1

Yeah, if you wanna join the military might as well get that degree and come in as an officer.

That being said, I'm enlisted in the Army right now, and its very rewarding, but an extremely tough daily mental battle.

Hell, as it is, I'm far more likely to get killed by stray gunfire driving back to the highway when I leave work in 20 minutes than I am to get killed over the course of an entire career as a combat pilot in the USAF.

Aye, officers make a lot more money. :p

I was working off the assumption that the OP's funds were also running low. The Enlisted side of the house will do a lot for your education. Not sure how the officer side handles their members desire for further education though.

Or you could go my attempted route. Enlist for as short as possible. Get the college benefits. Then go back to school and re-enter as an officer with no college loans.
