If I don't autoupdate a game will steam still notify me when updates are available?

Ideally I'd like it to work like Windows update where I can set it to notify me when new updates are available but not download them, only on a per game basis. Or will I have to go back and manually check each game if I turn autoupdate off?

Assuming their settings are transparent as I'm reading them, you can keep message notifications on but will have to turn off automatic updating on a per-game basis.

Ok that's basically what I want. I still want to be notified of an update but I want to limit the autoupdating to a select few games. The rest I will update only rarely, or specifically when notified, as it's a waste of bandwidth to have them always updating everything.
