Has he taken any college courses? He could probably have them applied to get his high school diploma.

no he hasn't taken any further education at all. he spent the last 10 years (plus the time during his high school years) doing drugs and wasting time.

He had to take 2 classes during HS to pass. But if you mess up you gotta go on the 5 Year plan.

I'm not aware of any plans at any high schools to admit 28 year old students to take 2 classes to get a regular high school diploma. Once you hit 21 years of age, if you don't have a regular high school diploma, you're not getting one. The only option (afaik) is a GED. You don't need to take phys ed or wood shop for a GED - you simply have to pass a test.

BTW, not to stereotype too much, but isn't it usually the case where the druggy students actually seem to major in wood shop? :p

Hate to sound like a jerk... but I guess he should have thought of that 12-13 years ago.

Was there some circumstance that physically prevented him from taking these classes or alternative courses?

I doubt that a high school will allow him to pick up where he left off over a decade ago because you could probably bet on him not being able to pass most of their standard tests.

Take your GED or whatever that test is

It's easy

But honestly why wouldn't you just take the PE/woodshop that you needed to graduate? If it was a medical reason the school should have exempted you from those courses

Where I live they would give him "life credits" for those two classes and give him a diploma.

you don't sound like a jerk at all and i couldn't agree with you more... he was lazy (and still is) and now he's trying to get up off the ground. being lazy, doing drugs, and bad choice of friends (which he still currently has and they too lack hs diplomas and i totally resent them) is why he didn't finish. he felt like he 'deserved' an overextended break for some reason.

I don't know about 10 years later, but been there and done that myself over a shorter span of time. When I was in HS, my father and I got to the point where I had to leave, so I enlisted in the military. About a year later, I enrolled in night school for adults, and it seems they ordered my HS transcript from my former school. I got my diploma within 4 weeks, simply by completing what I missed.

Seems doable to me. Also, good for your friend, albeit late, for cleaning up his life. :)

Edit: I was only 18 years old at that time. I have been to college since then.
