If I did not see the first two LOTR would it be a waste to go and watch the third?

Would I be lost? All I've been hearing is how great this movie is. I think I want to see it after finals.

Yes, you most definitely will be lost. Like already suggested, rent the other ones first or borrow them from someone. You could watch it if you're jjust into cinematography or something like that, but you'll be missing out on a lot.

if you havent read the books then rent other 2 movies first.. you will be really lost... however you might be a little lost either way because of the small discrepencies

You could watch them in reverse order! :p

Seriously though I would definitely rent the other 2 before seeing Return of the King.

Agreed.

About the extended. Helpful with the first film, and VITAL for the second. The theatrical and extended versions of TT are in fact IMO completely different movies. As someone who has read the trilogy at least half a dozen times, it always nagged at me that certain scenes were cut because of time. Unfortunately, that leaves you pretty clueless as to why these characters are behaving towards each other as they do.

Oh, and these movies are different from the books, however given the fact that we would be looking at a hundred hour movie instead of what is essentually a ten hours one, some things had to change. I give Peter Jackson et al for having done as good a job as they did, and did remarkably well, considering how Hollywood studios think.

I think it remarkable they were done at all, and more so that they were done twice as well as I would have expected.

Good question. He must've been locked up somewhere for the last couple of years for not having watched the first two LOTR.

<--- was in solitary :p

i havent seen the first 2 either, and im going tonight with my friends because my friend owes me money, and since he never carries cash, the next best thing is to have him buy my ticket.

i work with some LOTR fans though, who have seen the movies and read the books. they caught me up and explained it to me. ill probably go Memento style and watch the rest of the movies backwards.
