If I change ONLY motherboard....

my brother has a p4 2.4C on a Asus mobo, an older model.
I just got an extra p4c800E deluxe and i want to put that in. If i do a straight swap... will i need to reinstall XP?

I actually did this and now the computer keeps restarting..it gets to the window where it asks me if i want to bott up in safe mode or normal. no matter what I pick, it restarts.

Is this because the hard drive or the OS has no info on the motherboard?

thanks

Down near the bottom under 'Misc. Notes:'. Skip the paragraph about Sysprep.

This procedure works great.

Of course two people are going to jump in any second and say you can't do it and must reinstall. Do not listen to the naysayers!

Yes that procedure works and you don't need to do a fresh install. BUT.... as it says in that guide in the second paragraph.."A clean wipe of the hard drive and full OS installation with fresh drivers and patches is undoubtedly the best solution."

Why on earth anyone would want to keep the accumulated crap from an old install instead of having a fresh install is beyond me. Of course, it always gives you a chance to post about the random crashes and problems with your "new" pc😉

It takes too much time to get my systems the way I like them. Downloading and installing all of those Microsoft updates is a PITA. 😛
