If it's community property ... and he wouldn't be worried about losing it if it wasn't, I think he will still owe her half of the value before it was destroyed. She may have to sue to get it, but I bet she wins.

Why wouldn't it be considered arson? Maybe was paid off and uninsured?

Yeah, but this way he has the knowledge that he screwed her out of her share without a lawyer taking a cut for good measure.

I agree...I used to think that way myself until I went through divorce(s) . What he did was childish and stupid and definately is /was a no win situation.
