If i buy the R520..

What would be the minimum for

PSU (taking R520, one or two optical drives, cpu and memory into consideration)
CPU (Athlon64 please)
Memory

The reason I ask is because I want to build a gaming pc around it (R520) but i don't want to break the bank. Knowing what the minimum's should be, I could have a good idea on how much I should spend to fit my needs.

Thanks for any information.

Why don't you wait until July 26 when the card is officially announced with all the details you need and you also get a look at the nvidia G70 so that you can buy the superior card.

I figured people who have been following the next generation process would have an idea of how demanding the R520 would be.

BTW, good information ShadowBlade. Thanks =)

800W PSU
A64 5600+
4 GB XDR DDR2000

Nah seriously, if money is a concern, you won't be able to afford the R520 anyway.
If it's not, then maybe a Venice 3200+ (OC it of course) or better yet, an A64 X2 4400+
Good 500W or better PSU (i like the OCZ Modstreams)
2x512 MB Corsair VS or 2x1024 MB if you can.

What is the venice not overclocked in terms of speed compared to a overclocked P4? I've got a 2.8 running at 3.5GHZ (250FSB w/synced memory) and I'm wondering which is faster...

Well, a Venice @ 2.5 would likely be around 3.6-4.0 GHz P4 levels.

You all make good points, I figured i would go a little crazy on the video card since (i'm assuming) its the most important part in a gaming pc.

The reason i started this thread is because i was trying to see if i could go a step lower in some areas to make up for the major jump in GPU to fit my budget. This was my initial proposal

$142 MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
$333 AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
$305 SAPPHIRE 100105SR Radeon X800XL
$78 crucial 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)
$78 crucial 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)
$106 THERMALTAKE Tsunami VA3000SWA Silver Aluminum
$140 OCZ OCZ520ADJ ATX 520W Power Supply
$77 Samsung 120gb 8mb cache SATA150
$32 Rosewill black CDRW w/ DVD-ROM

The R520 will probably be double what x800xl is, so i was hoping i could go a step lower in some areas to make up for that 300$ increase.

Paying too much for a mediocre motherboard and no need to go that high on a CPU, go venice and get the same performance for less. Geta good quality DVD+RW burner and you should be very happy with the X800 XL. You're kidding yourself if you think you'll be able to get the top of the line R520 or G70 (the only cards that will double performance of the XL) for $550 (likely retail) in the next 6 months.

The only motherboard i'd rather have is the DFI.
Since when is the Neo4 mediocre?

I would somewhat agree that the San Diego may not be worth the money, but they do seem to OC a bit higher & of course you have twice the L2 cache. I would say that if you plan to buy an X2 later, then go with Venice.
If you don't plan to upgrade the CPU anytime soon (& can afford the San Diego), then go for it.

Hmm, a 2.2GHz A64 is about a 3.2GHz P4, and a 2.6 A64 is about a 3.7. No no no, scratch that...a 2.2 A64 is about a 3.4...it's not that easy to compare the clock speeds of the two CPUs seeing as there are so many other things to take into consideration...

same FSB? Here is the thing, a P4 at 3.5GHZ with a 250MHZ FSB is going to be faster than the P4s with 3.6GHZ core but the same 200MHZ FSB...

$140 for a PSU is simply too much.

Amen to that.

Benchmarks are always a good thing to look at ;)

Very true.
However, an A64 3200+ would be running at 250 HTT (FSB) if it was at 2500 MHz, so it too would be performing better than the normal 2.4 GHz A64, possibly even close to the 2.6 GHz FX-55 ;)

Nah, not wth the 1MB l@ on an FX-55...

In gaming, I would put a venice 3200+ (non-OCed) about equivalent to a 3.5-3.6 GHz P4. In other apps (encoding, mainly), it would be different. Oced to 2500 MHz, I would say a 4.2-4.3 GHz P4... Of course it really depends How GPU bottlenecked you are and what games you are playing.

I agree with the above posts. Wait for them to be released (actually in stores at reasonable prices). I would just go for the x800xl now and wait a year or so to upgrade. By that time, the cards will be much more decently priced.

Well if a 3200+ venice non overclocked is like a 3.5-3.6GHZ P4 non overclocked, what would a P4 3.5GHZ 250MHZ FSB be the equivalent to a P4 non overclocked?
