Will an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion mean I also have to reinstall all my apps?

<-- Mac n00b.

The one annoying thing is you will likely have to pay $29.99 for Lion in a month. If you wait a month, you'll get it pre-installed. It just depends on if having it 1 month early is worth $30 to you or not.

I'll get employee pricing at least if not a copy that's lying around, so not a biggie. :whiste:

I've been holding off for so long and need a replacement for my aging Desktop PC (E6400 C2D@3.2Ghz w/ATI 1950 pro, it's over five years old!).

I'm pretty sure my Dad bought his mac just before (like a month) Snow Leopard came out, and they gave him the upgrade for free at the genius bar. Maybe they also have the power to issue $30 credit to the app store or some particular coupon code for this purpose...

Purchased after Lion announced = free upgrade once released.

I think it was stated in apple email but I deleted yesterday.

I had a 'Welcome to Lion' email, but it had no such promise, so I went on Apple Live chat and got this:

"Blah blah, unreleased product, blah blah, specification may change, blah blah, you may still have to buy it as we don't know if it will be free even after release."

So no solid answer from there either. Lame. :|

How are you going to get a copy that's lying around? I thought it's only able to go through the Mac App store to download and not disc?

traditionally Apple has an Up-To-Date program that's effective on the announcement date (i.e. anyone buying a Mac since yesterday). But right now they only have a placeholder:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

Since distribution will be on the Mac App Store, perhaps Apple is deciding whether to charge the customary $9.95 S/H or possibly a reduced fee. Paying $29.99 to upgrade is basically the worst case and it's not that much for 2 Mac households.

Right when Lion ships, if you're buying a standard config off the shelf, it'll usually come with an "upgrade DVD" until fresh inventory comes in with the new OS pre-loaded. A few purchasers will actually buy at this exact moment so they have the flexibility of running either the previous or the newest OS with official AppleCare support.

IIRC, if you bought a Leopard Mac less than a month before SL came out you got SL for free. I'm assuming it will be the same for the Lion release (?)

About 2/3 down the page. It gives info about purchase date 6/6 on for free update.

" The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request."

Haha, she just did and confirmed there's a tech guarantee on new Macs now for Lion upgrades. WIN! Order goes in tonight via EPP for a MBP with a 27% discount. :D
