Sorry, not versed in how this all works(how easy it is for someone to monitor my surfing and steal private information while using someone elses connection), but wanted to see if the VPN protects me anymore from any monitoring somebody else could do while I surf using their connection.

As long as the traffic goes through the VPN connection, yes, you will be more secure. If you're using an unencrypted access point, the VPN connection will provide a level of encryption for you.

If the wireless connection is not secured with any kind of encryption, I'm not sure if it makes any kind of difference whether or not you use a VPN.

Ever been to a Skyline or a Gold Star chili joint in Cincinnati? You don't order cheese with your food. You order food with your cheese.

That's the whole point of a VPN.

I'm sure your work would love to know you are connecting to their VPN through an unsecured wireless connection.

But the answer to your question is Yes. Anything you do through the VPN will be more protected from outside monitoring with the obvious exception being any internal monitoring being done by your Work.

Well, it depends on what you mean by secure.

If we assume that your companies VPN is using some form of encryption, than any traffic to and from your PC and your company's network will be secure.

However, if you are surfing for porn, checking your mail, etc. and the traffic isn't routed through the VPN connection, then that traffic will not be secured.

If you are concerned about someone on your neighbor's network seeing your PC, and possibly accessing its shares, it makes no difference whether you are on a VPN or not. Turn off all of you shares, and get a good personal firewall...
