what would be a reason for doing it ?

One reason not to (and it applies mostly to newer phones) ... is when a manufacturer has an upgrade program, we'd just have to provide the ESN# and they would approve of the upgrade. Wouldn't want to post your ESN for everyone else to use for this... they would not accept your valid ESN if everyone else has tried using it...

I wouldnt. It doesnt pertain to buying it.

Well it kinda does though, you can use the ESN and call the provider to make sure the phone is clear to be sold (i.e. no pending bills remaining) and activated on another account.

True, but there are still a sizeable amount of customers using CDMA/TDMA rather than GSM (Verizon & Sprint)

Providing the ESN is important (for the purpose you mentioned), especially if your seller feedback is scant or if it's a newer, more expensive phone.

One solution might be to say "ESN provided upon request" and let people e-mail you for it. Some people do disclose it in their listing, though there is the off chance that some dumbass will add it to their account without buying it. Can be a hassle to get it cleared off.

But if I were shopping for a phone on ebay and the seller had 50 or more pos. feedback and stated in the auction listing that the ESN was clear I'd have no problem buying it without checking the ESN.
