I am not really a gamer but I do like to do several things at once on my rig, such as, surfing burning DVD,s, playing music and RARing. With that is there a case that I might need 2 GB of ram ? I do OC so I would like a fast set of 1GB sticks. Would I need 2gigs or should I just stick to one?

1 gig should be fine for you. I've been surfing, burning DVDs, and listening to music all evening and everything is going smoothly as usual with 1 gig.

You'll know if you need it. Check out the Task Manager and note the peak mem. usage; that'll give you your answer.

No need anymore unless you Photoshop the hell out of the Puter ;)

I would suggest getting a 1GB stick. This way, you can just add another one in later without losing the benefits of a 1T command rate. :)

I've found 2 gB extremely useful for two things:
1) Photo scanning and editing
2) Graphics intensive programs like Visio or AutoCAD
OTherwise, 1 gB has been all I need, even for some high end
engineering number crunching, even with Outlook, MSExcel, 2-3 engr. apps plus several browser windows all open.

I'd go with the single 1GB also.

2GB sounds like overkill for what you want to do at the moment, but it's always good to cater for future upgrades and save yourself some money in the long run.

With my setup I think it's better for me to run in dual channel. Isn't that better for overclocking ?

Well, it could be my imagination, but after going from 1GB->2GB now I can run a lot more programs with next to 0 lag, like Azureus downloading many torrents, playing a game same time while alttabbing and surfing web+chatting....I couldn't do that before with 1GB ram, lotsa lag, now its all good.

While you're going all that stuff, try this...
Ctrl+Alt+Delete...
Task Manager...
Performance Tab...
How much of your 1GB are you using?

I would imagine that your CPU is being taxed far more than your memory is.

Azureus is running here with 65 torrents open. It does not use more than 130 mb (including java). Usally Firefox, outlook, WMP, messenger & MS Word are running also. I never come close to using 1gb. DVD burning does not get there either.

I`d say 1 gb is enough for now.

only for gaming does 2GB really impact the average person right now (BF2)

1GB works fine for anyone else, who is not an uber ultra crazy power user.

I use about 800MB peak with Firefox, Trillian, Azureus, Zonealarm running a scan, Ad-Aware running a scan, Spy Sweeper running a scan, a bunch of utilities open, and Winamp blasting music, so for you, 1GB should be fine as well.
