If gas stations accept credit cards, why can't they just stay open 24/7?

The ones around here do. The one next to the grocery store near me is actually completely automated.

Yea, and a lot do. Hell, even the Shoppette on base stays open 24 hours for gas (if you have a card) ;)

There are a few around here that stay open 24/7 like kwiki mart and the 24/7 mart but they aren't fully automated or anything like that. I did however see a gas station in some small town (less than 100 people) that was credit card only and it had pop machines instead of a shop.

If no one is around, they need to shut down the pump.
Gasoline is dangerous stuff ya know.

Nope.

usually the peon inside needs to authorize the transaction, which involves hitting a button or something.
I dunno, all I know is I've gotten gas from fully automated places where there wasn't even a place for a person to be.

All the gas stations around me are 24/7. And usually you need to punch in your billing zip code for the card in order for it to authorize the transaction (using the numeric keypad on the pump itself close to where you insert your card).

it all depends on the area you live in and how much traffic will go thru during the later hours. If it won't make a profit they won't have it open.

I remember driving through Hwy 58 once on the way back from Vegas. Some hole in the wall Chevron had self serve gas, 24/7, no one there at 3am.

All the gas stations around here are open 24/7... at least the pumps. Swipe card, pump gas.
