If fireworks are illegal in certain community, then how come they are being sold?

In most parts of Southern California, it's illegal to light fireworks (of any kind), but you can find boutiques selling them at most corners. 😕

Does that make any sense?

when you buy the fireworks, you should have to sign some sort of document indicating you do not plan to use them illegally.

All the fireworks in the stands aren't dangerous, unless you consider party poppers, noise pop pop's and sparklers a huge hazard.

thats the way it is here. nothing explosive, just sparkly and bright.

of course, i can drive 5 mins. to cross the state line and buy stuff that could blow up the whole neighborhood.

Wow. Totally surprised this question needs to be asked.

The legality of fireworks varies from CITY to CITY. When you see them being sold, it means they are legal in that city.

I wouldn't rely on them being sold implying they are legal to use even in that city. My local Pep Boys sells lots of things I can hook to my car, but they aren't legal to use.

No, not really.

For example, if you buy them in PA you need to show an out of state license and sign a form that says you will take them out of the state within 6 hours.

Care to explain why they're not dangerous? Last time I lit one, it was in the shape of a horse shoe and had about 7 tubes that would shoot upward a multitude of shapes and sparks.

But, I'm not saying that I can't be mindful when lighting them, just why they're sold if I can't play with them, on the same blocks that they're being sold on.

If you're that worried, move to Socialist Canada, where they're thinking of banning sparklers.

Meanwhile, fifteen minutes across the border, there's a monster fireworks depot where they sell everything from the classic bottle rocket to a single-shot six-inch mortar. :Q

Erm, no.

California State Law is very clear. Fireworks = bad.

I've never had to do that???

there are certain cities that allow 'safe and sane' fireworks...basically the fireworks beign sold at these stands follow certain guidelines and do not go boom explode or blow up..will not fly in the air...they are just light shows basically

they are legal in the city in whihc they are beign sold besides i doubt cops care if you light these types in any city...

NJ has already banned sparklers. You canucks are slacking off!

You can sell it but you can't use it. Think of the cable blackbox as an example. 😉

They're probably expecting you to drive to a nearby city that allows fireworks.

But they can't stop me from firing off the mortars I got in Indiana!

They'll have to pry my fireworks out of my cold, dead hands.

They're illegal in CA, too. They said they're a fire hazard. I shoud drive to Reno and bring back some cool Nevadan fireworks 🙂

Actually, sparklers are one of the most dangerous fireworks... They burn at an extremely high temperature, yet are marketed mainly as something for the younger children to run around and have fun with. IIRC, sparklers are responsible for a majority of ER visits due to fireworks injuries. Ban the sparklers, and let us have our mortars back!

(the inherent reason for their danger is the way they're used and considered as "safe." Other large fireworks aren't treated anywhere near as recklessly -light the fuse and run. I don't know anyone stupid enough to light mortars and hold them in their hand. (although for bottle rockets, and other rockets, I used to hold them and light them in my hand - until the day I had one of the ones that shoots out the tail - little tiny burn spots all over the back of my hand resulted, as if someone through a handful of sand at 1000 degrees at my hand. duhhhh)

Illegal in Reno as well. Fortunately that doesn't cover the Washoe Indian Colony. Any of them for that matter.

I wonder if enough Californians starts an initiative to amend the ban (ban sparklers, revive mortars), how many signatures that would take? Hmm...

I wondered this myself. Same thing here in NW Ohio- everything is illegal except sparklers and smoke bombs. How can all these stores sell mortors and stuff and not be shut down?

When I used to go to Parump (sp?) in Nevada for fireworks, I had to sign a paper saying i would take em out of Nevada within 24 hours (those were the more hardcore fireworks).

And from what I have seen... I live in Cerritos, CA and normal fireworks are illegal in that city, but are legal in norwalk, lakewood and artesia, which are all border cities, so you see firework stands on street corners in those cities, but can see them from many parts of cerritos, since many intersections are half cerritos and half another city, but you dont see them in cerritos
