I have XP Pro.

Whenever I suffer a system or application crash, a popup asks me if I want to send the report to microsoft. I always say no.

So I am thinking of disabling error reporting by one or both of the 2 methods I've read about: .
1. via the control panel (system - advanced), and/or
2. via msconfig (services tab: remove tick in Errror Reporting ).

If I disable error reporting, I understand I will no longer be offered the option of sending an error report to microsoft; but could someone tell me if the same error report will still be generated for me to see?

tick the box next time you get the popup.
That will stop asking you if you want to send the error to ms.
It will still enable you to see the errors in event viewer
