Yeah, like the Patriot Act. The war in Iraq and its funding. The Medicare prescription drug plan which we can't afford. Yeah, they got a lot done. It was awesome. Can't wait for McCain.

At the time? You mean McCain thinks we should get rid of it now?

He has a record of working with Democrats to accomplish stuff. The people in congress will remember this and will work with McCain to get bills passed.

Obama on the other hand has no track record of working with Republicans which means the Republicans in congress are going to be far less likely to want to listen to Obama or work with him. This could result in grid lock in which nothing meaningful gets done.

There is historical precedence to what I say.
During Clinton's first two years the Republicans refused to work with and the results were a disaster for the Democrats in the 1994 election. Afterwards Clinton worked with the new Republican leadership and a lot was accomplished.

Post 9-11 Republicans and Democrats worked together to pass a lot of bills, but post 2004 election things with the war got bitter and nothing meaningful has come out of Bush's second term.

Gotta love the non Prof John contention. That McCain can work with democrats and Obama has no track record of working with Republicans.

At the rate the GOP is going Non Prof John, When the congressional gavel first bangs in 09, there may be very few remaining GOP members in congress to work with. Once the number of GOP Senators drop below 40, there goes any GOP ability to grid lock anything. Most of the Senate seats up this time are now held by the GOP and many of the incumbents are retiring.

the democrats are not going to have a veto-proof majority after the 2008 elections, and I don't see you arguing against PJ's point that McCain is the only one with a proven track record of being willing to compromise with the opposition, even on contentious issues like immigration that almost cost him the nomination, not just soft-balls like disarmament.

Two comments to make.

(1) Any non Prof John predictions on elections stink. He was the very fellow who predicted there was zero way the dems could take the Senate in 11/06. With GWB&co chickens returning home to roost in huge numbers now, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the entire economy could be in the toilet by fall. Under that scenario, there is a strong probability the GOP could
have less than 40 Senators left

(2) If anything, Obama has the best record of working with groups. He came to fame as a community organizer in Chicago by working with diverse groups. Then he went on to the Illinois Senate where he did much of the same. And since the GOP does nothing but gridlock in the US Senate, no one in the Senate from either party is able to get anything done lately.
As for McCain, 08 is his last chance to be a GOP power.

how republican is the south side of chicago exactly? what does a community organizer even do that would give him some insight towards building bridges with right-wing republicans in congress who are going to have fundamental disagreements with him and his policies?

How many republicans are in the Chicago business community? And yes those are some of the groups Obama had to work with to get minority programs through. In terms of the Illinois Senate, there are many Southern Illinois Republicans there because that part of the State is
much like Indiana. And need I remind you that Obama won the Illinois democratic primary handily which shows he has statewide support.

If anything McCain will have more problems with democrats. He may get it on a few isssues, but in general economic issues, he is miles away from any democratic visions.

That statement is so full of crap it is unbelievable that you can even type it.

Obama has NO track record of working with the other side. Talk all you want about what he did in Chicago, but we aren't electing him because of what he did in Chicago. We are electing him because of what he has done in the Senate. And in the Senate he is the most liberal Senator, which means he votes with the Democrats on nearly every issue. He has NEVER crossed over and worked with the Republicans on any issue as a Senator. Yet somehow people believe that the second he gets elected he will magically unite the country? Hell he can't even unite the Democratic Party!!!!!

No one knows what the next President will be like, not even those running for office.

It really depends on which way the winds are blowing. They will set the sails accordingly. Unfortunately it appears the course is still the same. Right into the eye of a storm named "Big Gov".

I was thinking that the Presidency is a complex job in the best of times, and right now this isn't all roses.

The first Bush said "No new taxes". I think he meant it, however he felt the need to change that even though he knew he'd eat crow for the rest of his life. He had to weigh the situation against what he said earlier. Whether or not you agree with his decision, he sucked it up and took responsibility.

I know what I would like to do if I were President, however I expect much of that would change based on the reality on the ground. Only an ignorant person would place his personal agenda and pride above the needs of the country. Times change and so do people, even Presidents if needs must and if they have the best interests at heart. No one really knows what President Self would be like a couple years down the road.
