You really think that driving up oil prices is a winning political move right now? My guess is that's a throwaway bargaining chip which ultimately isn't of much value at the moment anyway.
 
Obama originally wanted nothing. thanks to bickering and demands from Republicans (who always knew this had to be done, anyway), he now gets to make demands in order to "work out a deal."


So...he "wins" no matter what.

I disagree. I think Obama originally wanted a clean increase in the debt ceiling, without having to pay even lip service to ever cutting government's growth.
 
Obama should just veto this crap. Let the debt ceiling expire. Shutdowns help Democrats politically. Plus Obama is going to be king, deciding who gets paid and who doesn't. Can put Republican supporters in a world of pain.

The budget was already passed with republican votes. That was the time to fuck with this. You dont fuck up the entire world economy to score political points. Only tea party retards are that stupid.

So our borrowing and spending slightly less money is now going to "fuck up the entire world economy"? Damn, I must have missed the memo where the level of stupidity was officially increased. So now the entire world economy is based on the United States of America borrowing money. No, wait. Not just on us borrowing money, on us borrowing far more money than we can afford. Yep, the entire world has become nothing more than a tick on our collective back.

I always wondered if they taught economics at clown college. Now I know they do. Well, economics combined with hysterics anyway.

For one, a budget never passed (semantics maybe). For another, the Repubs did in the last stop-gap spending bill to get to the year-end , but got fooled. Remember the cuts they got were later found to be accounting gimmicks and not cuts at all?

This year's budget wasn't supposed to have a debt ceiling issue. Either revenues didn't pan out as expected, or expenses were greater than estimated.

They're effing with this, not because of the current budget, but because of following years' budgets. And it's Obama who is insisting on a long term deal and not a S/T fix.

Funny how Obama said he'd veto the McConnell/Reid plan which would have essentially been that very thing. He's been insisting on a big deficit reduction package and has said he doesn't want a stopgap.

the so called oil subsidy is not what it sounds like, its a way to speed depreciation for every person that pays taxes, its just trying to take that away from the oil companies.
 
It's not a matter of looking weak, it's a matter of looking like a reasonable adult in a room full of petulant obstinante children. If Obama gets us through this manufactured totally unnecessary crisis without the GOP causing the USA to go into default and without our credit rating being downgraded, he deserves a place on Mount Rushmore.

Some sources said the deal would work in two stages, with spending cuts and a debt ceiling increase occurring right away while entitlement reforms and tax reforms would occur later.

Bad idea.

Pass a temporary increase and then get the reforms figured out and pass another increase then.

To many times in the past we have made deals passed on things happening in the future only to have them not happen.
 
There are no reforms to figure.

Demand a balanced budget, and ask our "public servants" how to achieve it.
