If BIOS hangs, what is failing?

A fast question... if the computer sometimes hangs while browsing the BIOS, does this indicate clearly a motherboard problem? Or still a bad CPU/memory can make a BIOS hang?

No, boots normally. But, besides the "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" BSOD, sometimes hangs while in BIOS setup.

I'm almost sure that's a hardware problem, just trying to identify which component.

Could be the motherboard?

My gut feeling is something to do with the CPU, perhaps overheating or overclocked past what it can handle, or possibly motherboard or power-supply issues. (Bad caps, problem with CPU voltage-regulation circuit, or just plain defective mobo.)
