Would it destroy the board or just the chip . My friend was getting weird cmos screen with artifacts and removed his bios chip thinking resaeting it would help ( against my advice) . He reinstalled it upside down which caused the bios to heat up . The board is totally dead I was able to confirm the bios chip was insrtazlled wrong as I also own an ASUS k7m. Should he try to get a replacement bios chip or a new Mobo?

Hard to say till you try it, I would try a chip first if the board would cost 2X what the chip does or more.

if you stuck it in upside down, it WILL fry easily.. very easily. you will probably need a new bios chip

if you removed it quick enough, you may not have damaged it permanantly, just need to rewrite it, but if left in there too long (more than 5 seconds or so), then you will need to get a whole new chip

The gates on the bios chip will be destroyed in about 3-5 seconds. They are a one-way path for current and putting it in backwards will definitely destroy all the gates printed on the chip. You will probably need a new chip. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I wasn't the first to say it.

Good luck
