Forget about it, Fett. Those who have to ask just don't get it. They'll never get it until they get it.

Widmer Hef FTW.

Umm, what?
Since when does trying something and not liking the taste = only being comfortable with what you know?
You can try new things and like OR dislike them.
I dislike beer, and I have tried it more than once. I don't see a reason why I should try and get used to it when IMO it tastes like ass. I would much rather stick to other things that I have tried and DO like the taste of.
Lets face it, not everyone likes everything, is that so hard to accept?

This is such a moronic quip, all these people ragging on someone because they don't see the point in acquiring a taste.

If you have to acquire the taste, newsflash: you don't like it. You can tell yourself otherwise, and the brain is a powerful tool, eventually you may come to believe it and poof now you like it. Ultimately though it has nothing to do with 'acquiring' the taste, its your desire to like this/want it for whatever reason. When it comes to alcohol the reason is fairly obvious.

Tastes also change over time, that's natural. I have met very few people that actually liked the taste of beer the first time they tasted it though.

There are many ways to prepare the same type of food (read: beef, veggies, etc). I don't like the way things are prepared one way while I do like them another. Just like that, I like the way some beers taste and I don't like the way other beers taste. I get a kick out of people who try beer once or twice and say they hate it. That's like eating a dirty potato just pulled from the ground and thinking that quality french fries will also taste terribly.

You may not have liked the first several kinds of beer you like, but there are so damn many kinds of beer in the world that you're very likely to come across one that you do like quite a lot. :)

My first beer was a Heineken or however you spell it. That garbage tastes like what piss smells like: rancid. However, all but ONE beer I've ever had since, I've really really liked. I don't like Guinness because of the aftertaste, but that's only disliking about a quarter of the things that matter in the experience.

I'm not trying to say that no one likes the way beer tastes, I'm simply saying that IMO, acquired tastes are silly when there is such a variety of food out there, why waste time making yourself 'like' something when there are plenty of foods you will enjoy from the get go?

I do think beer tastes like crap though (tried a decent selection) and that most people just drink it for the effect, not because its a tasty beverage.

Well, if you kept drinking the same beer that you know you hate, I'd see your point. Nobody does. :p They move on to different beers. It's not like all beers taste the same until you aquire a taste for it and then all of a sudden no two beers taste alike. Any bonehead with half a tongue can tell the difference. It may just take a while to find a beer that tastes good to you. :) You're not forcing yourself to like a beer that you don't like, you're searching for a beer that you do like.

I actually do drinking it for it's tasty-beverage-ness. If I want to get sh|tfaced, I'll pony up and order shots. If I'm thirsty, I'll order DropTop or FatTire or Hef or BlackButte. :)

Wheat beer is pretty good. If you get drunk off the stuff, you may suffer a little more since it's unfiltered. Be sure to drink plenty of water after drinking wheat beer to help avoid a hangover. ;)

They say the same thing with coffee, but after 35 years, I STILL can't stand coffee. Tried it with everything you can put in it, no go. I can detect the slightest hint of coffee flavor in anything. Wish I liked it :(

Same here. I hate beer. I've tried various kinds (light, dark, domestic, imported) and they all have the same underlying taste which I can't stand. I do drink hard liquors... not that they taste good, but they can give you a good buzz quickly.

The sad thing is that I don't even drink beer to get drunk anymore... I just get different kinds for the taste. I guess I'm a pretty rare breed.

I drink hard liquor (not all and not all straight, normally masked in girly drinks). Beer is the suck, as is most wine.

You're right. You should always give up on things right away if you don't enjoy it the first time you try it.

Too bad he didn't hate posting on ATOT the first time he tried it.

Nonsense. It's food, not a task you have to get good at to enjoy.

I don't feel like acquiring a taste for anything beyond cheap American beer (or similar imports like Bass). I like cheap American beer, no point to spending more on anything else.

I did have a bottle of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat... sure enough it tasted like cherry and wheat.

I agree. Especially with the cigarettes. They taste nasty so how do folks get into them?
Weed I understand because you catch a buzz. But tobacco makes no sense.

As for beer, I dont like all the "classics". Bud, Miller, Coors and so forth. However I love Killians. I like Amber Boch if I've had a little of something else and my taste is less sensitive.

As for the serious hooch, I never had a hard time getting used to After Shock, Avalanche, Goldshlager, Root Beer Shnapps, and really good Island Rum. The kind you can find in Puerto Rico, St Thomas, St Maarten and all those places. Guavaberry is the SHIZNIT!
Also like really smooth Vodka with juices. Grey Goose is OK but I love Belvedere. Mix in some cranberry or orange juice and you dont even know its there.
Same with Amaretto and pineapple.

(Pardon my spelling.)

Yes, they DO say beer is an acquired taste.

What I never understood is, since it really doesn't taste all that good the first time you try it, WHY would you want to acquire a taste for it??!

I didn't care for beer in my younger days but people kept telling me that by the time I got out of the Marines I would like it.

It never happened.

Well with the exception of some DARK beers. But I never liked them until LONG after I was a civilian again....

being a college student, its much better to get drunk on beer because if you get sick - you puke and rally

Hard stuff will knock your ass down, get you sick, and then make you uber sick the following day.....many days spent like that

But damn, captain is the best!

Beer is an acquired taste.

IMO a good beer tastes better than any other foods or drinks.
For example, St Bernardus abt 12 is so good that every time I drink it, I consider dropping atheism and believing in a god.

things that don't have an acquired taste are usually "simpler" in tastes. They are sweet or sour or salty and thus ... they taste good right off the bat. I experience pretty hefty diminishing margainal returns on things like that usually. Things get boring or bland. With Beer, however, the flavors are so bountiful and massive, as well as diverse, that it's nearly impossible to get bored of the flavor.

I don't drink beer for effects. I drink beer because it is delicious.
I'm not about to drink 8 or 9 bottles of $10 beer in one night just to get effects. Good beer is too good and too expensive to waste on binge drinking.

If I want to drink for effects, I'll do that with my buddy Jim Beam.

Very well put. I can't agree with you more. Though for drink effects I tend to move towards Jack or Captain.

 It still tastes like rotten coconut milk. I will never acquire a taste for that.

Gimme an ale, bitter, stout, or pilsner any day.
