was faced with another tragedy like 9-11 and had the opportunity to help out in some way, what would be the most effective way for us to help? Should we consider trying to put some of those types of efforts towards a current world problem, like the tsunami recovery or orphaned kids in the Congo or something?

(And you thought this was a spoof thread...)

We'd be in charge of dispensing witticisms to the survivors.

other than donations, i don't know how easy it would be to coordinate a group response. There's no doubt that there are several members who are skilled in various respects and could help a great deal in a crisis situation...

I'm wondering if starting some type of e-penis thread on OT about how much you contributed or something would increase donations though. Doing things as a collective tends to encourage people to do more than they would do on their own.

You know...if only you put your opinions of whatever hot topic you're starting in the OP, then this wouldn't look so much like a troll post.

I actually avoid donating to media-blanketing disasters like 9-11 and tsunami relief. Those kinds of disasters get so much attention that the general public over-donates while other charities go wanting.

9-11 was a case where more money was donated than they could spend usefully, even before the celebrity fundraising events. Also the Red Cross had more donated blood than they could handle.

So I'd probably send an extra check off to Northwest Harvest instead (it supplies food banks throughout Washington state) to help make up for their impending shortfall as WA state folks sent all their money off to earthquake relief in Dirkadirkastan.

I would help lead an organization that "MOO's" at the survivors and the people who need help.

We go out, we look for people who need help. Then we MOOOOOOOOO!

It'll be a legend told throughout the pages of history. The people that MOO! Brave and Heroic they were!

That would defeat the purpose.

Many Anandtech forums members already contribute to distributed computing projects.

As for other ideas, we have enough members that people could also set up local help points. Something like an address book of people you could ask for help from if you are stuck/stranded in a certain location, etc.

As a group, we could have enough strength to make big monetary differences or make a voice heard, but that would take the concerted effort of most/all members and that's not likely to happen.
