I've done all my deposits through an ATM for about 4 or 5 years now and have NEVER had a problem with the deposits.

I wouldn't stick money in an ATM either. Checks are not so bad, they can always be cancelled/reissued, but it's so easy for them to say you shortchanged them with cash. The burden of proof lies with you and you have no proof with this method.

At my bank (TCF Ann Arbor) you can't deposit cash using ATMs - only checks. Also, the envelopes have special holes on them for some purpose, I'm assuming. I wouldn't recommend using a regular envelope - it's probably like a dollar bill slot on a vending machine - it won't take it if it's the wrong size/shape.
Personally, I think it's a good idea to grab like 20 envelopes next time you're there and just use those.
