JW and I were talking last night and this good question came up.

Will the Athlon 64 be considered K8 or J2?

I believe it should be J2 because it goes into 64 bit territory.

Did they call the Opteron J1?

AMD experts or maybe an AMD rep please chime in.

Edit: Thanks already have answered that Athlon64 is K8 series.
So what is Opteron series???

K8....

At least thats what Anand himself said at QuakeCon yesterday at the hardocp workshop. He said that AMD has been calling the Athlon 64 as the K8 architecture.

both are k8 and x86-64 supporting both 32 bit and 64 bit code
the opteron is just the server version
the athlon64 is the desktop version coming out next month

they released the server version first
same family tho
