If Apple computers cost the same as PCs, would you buy one instead?

I'm asking this because I'm thinking that Apple should adopt the PC philosophy that anyone and everyone should be allowed to produce one. I mean, even if they charged a very small royalty, say $20 per computer, I'm certain they would make a ton of money. I mean, imagine if they had 50% market share, compared to the current 5%. On top of that, they could continue selling their Apple branded stuff.

The thing is, they're spending all this money developing software such as MacOS for a relatively small number of people. On software alone, this sort of arrangement would benefit them greatly IMO.

Price has nothing to do with it. It's the software I run, the games, the building from custom parts which keeps me on windows PCs. I own a couple macs and even prefer the windows enviroment over panthers.

But even before switching to mac I would give Linux a serious look because all the software is FREE!!!

Why?

Games are 10:1 PC vs Apple, and with PC you usually have more choices for any given tool or application. Even Adobe is putting more resources into PC develpment than Mac development these days.

Sure, viruses are also 50:1 PC vs. Mac, but I use Eudora and am not stupid enough to open attachments.

A better question might be: "... would you recommend your grandma and other computer n00bs buy one?"

They already tried it several years back. The end result was the clone makers took market share from Apple and not the PC makers. Which is why their licenses were promptly terminated when Steve Jobs took over again.

Yes, I would buy another one. I might anyways.

I also prefer SPARC (4m and 4u specifically), Alpha, and AMD64.

Apple needs to offer more than one low-resolution LCD screen option on their Powerbooks. WSXGA and WUXGA are available on a number of 15" and 17" PC notebooks now, and Apple should be able to buy from the same suppliers. Everytime I'm tempted to consider a Powerbook, I find another reason not to buy one.

I like the ability to pick and choose which motherboard/chipset I wish to use, along with which CPU. I like the ability to choose which case and which video card, as well.

I own a PC (3 year old Athlon XP 1800+/Asus A7V266E box), along with an iMac from roughly the same time period.

if apple cost the same as a PC, there would be more customers for it, thus more software titles, games and otherwise.

Hell no as cost is only one factor in the equation. Other factors include:

-Windows.
-Software.
-Hardware.
-Choice.
-Expansion options and pricing.

I've found Apples to be a pain in the ass to work with. They can't efficiently utilize RAM for crap and if you put one on a network it becomes even more painfully slow. I can go make myself a sandwich, watch an episode of MST3K, and go to the bathroom all while waiting for Photoshop 7 to load on one. The OS infrastructure and GUI is also a pain in the ass. Also, whenever an Apple tech comes over to our department to troubleshoot, he'll have his nose burried in a 700-page "OS X Operators Manual" book for 3 hours (hours the department has to pay him for).

I would consider if they were to reopen their hardware spec. But as long as they are the sole source of their hardware - no way. Besides, now that Linux has really made some giant strides in usability, I really don't need Apple.

I play games. Games and Macs don't mix well (IMO). No games don't mix well with me so Macs are out.

hrmm...tough decision

as someone said, linux has made HUGE leaps in usability, and i'd reather learn linux than OSX (i have to use the latter at work)

but the things that I DO do, ie: chat and want logs to be saved, send files over chat (pics and stuff), type word documents, check e-mail. basically things the "average" pc user does (though that doesn't mean i am one...though farcry is making me wish i upgraded my mx420) are usually fully supported by OSX whereas Linux usually have 80% compatability (like open office filters still aren't perfect, and some MSN IM features still aren't fully supported, etc.)...

but in the end i'd want 100% compatabliity than 80%....

but b4 i declare MAC victory, by the time that happens, linux will probably be compatable with all that....so go Linuz ;)

I just want an AMD64 port of Panther, that's all. That way I could dual boot between that and Windows and not have to close myself off from the world of Windows software. It really wouldn't be that hard to do either, considering that the Unix underpinnings of OS X make it pretty much platform independent from the get-go. If their marketshare for computer hardware keeps shrinking, maybe we'll see it happen as a desperation move one day. Maybe.
