If Apple and all PC manufacturers combined...

...do you think we could make faster advancements in technology? By combined I mean shared general research (but obviously not all of it, as they'd still be competing).

They essentially do now. Everyone uses nvidia and ATI, the same 4-5 hard drive manufacturers, the same motherboard chipsets, the same CPUs, ....

I guess I never thought of that aspect. I was thinking more that if they were forced to share general information that they might try to hide as much as possible which would reduce advances made. Either way, if corporations didn't have agendas, it'd be sweet to see some of the stuff they could come up with.

well if seagate and hitachi combined technology and go vs everyone else, maybe the hdd industry would speed up.

You are still better off having the two best competing.

Not true.

The top 5-6 HDD manufactures have deals where they're all licensed to each other's patents.

What about processors though, which is kinda what I had in mind when I created the thread. Now that Apple is switching to x86, it'd be easier for CPU manufacturers to focus on one type of CPU and several features at a time.

Companies competing against each other without the right to keep their trade secrets confidential, will no longer have an incentive to invest in research & development to overcome their rivals' competitive advantages.

Profits and advances are not driven soley by comptetition, but by a consumer who will only want to buy a new computer if it is of a certain improvement from his or her old one.
