If AOL suddenly closed their doors tomorrow and closed for biz, what would you do?

Yeah, I know. It's not very likely, but let's at least try to use some imagination.

Myself personally, I'd celebrate, then start working on Microsoft even harder. ;)

What he said. There would sure be a lot of people that would think that the internet would go down with the company.

Probably watch the stock market take a dip and continue on browsing the net and neffing on Adelphia's cable line.

Hmm, very true. We'd either get rid of the majority of internet newbies, or we'd suddenly get flooded with them on all the good ISP's. Hmm.

Wouldn't affect me much, although I would probably have to find a replacement for AIM. Otherwise, I'd be sitting pretty surfing the net on my Cox cable connection at home and a T1 at work. :D

You do have a point. We wouldn't have AIM or ICQ anymore. We might actually have to switch to *shutter* Yahoo Messanger, or even worse *bigger shutter* MSN messanger. Eww. No thanks. I'll go back to IRC to do my chatting.

It's also prime breeding grounds for DoS/DDoS attacks, bulk e-mail spam, IRC spam/hacking, etc. etc. On top of that AOL is notorious for refusing to cooperate with companies in controlling users who abuse AOL's service to attack the company. This is why about every year DALnet would ban all AOL IPs until they decided to impliment whatever basic IRC-friendly security/identification standard DAL had asked them to start using in repeated and ignored e-mails. It's also why AOL IPs are banned here as well, at least for posting.

AOL's attituted is "get us money and screw everyone else." It takes something like DAL banning all AOL users for them to listen to reason. Their IP system is horrid. If you try to ban someone who keeps redialing with a dynamic IP you usually wind up banning an entire time zone.

Would not that mean that there will be no more internet? Most AOL users that I know think that AOL is the internet.
