the nearest apple store is about 2.5 hours away, and at the moment i don't have a car (or the time to take it up there). Should I just request product replacement from Apple and send it in?

You'll get it right back, trust me. Take it to the store.

What he said. In a store you have a chance of getting them to back down because you're there in person. By mail, not a hope in hell.

well, after about 20 minutes of fiddling with it i was able to snap it back into place so it doesn't look like its even been open. do i still have no chance of getting it fixed or replaced (by mail)? i'm really not able to go back to the store within the next few weeks (at least) and if there's any chance at all they'll replace or fix it by mail, i'd much rather do that.
edit: i'm thinking about giving it a shot through the mail, since Apple pays for shipping and handling, I'm thinking it'd be worth it to try it first, then if they mail it back take it to the Apple store?
